Short Home Row Notation
Please Note! - SHRN is currently only supported on Lichess.
Although HRN is fundamentally built on coordinate notation—where each coordinate maps directly to a square—it also supports a shorter notation, much like how SAN is a shorthand version of LAN. We call this Short Home Row Notation (SHRN). SHRN is made possible by assigning a few easy-to-reach keys, located just above the home row, to the chess pieces. These are known as Piece Keys, they are also used to select the desired piece when promoting a pawn.
Piece Keys
| Key | W | E | I | O | M |
| Piece | Rook | Knight | Bishop | Queen | King |
E.g. To enter a move in SHRN, simply type the Piece Key followed by the HRN destination square. For example, the SAN move Nc3 becomes EDD, where E is the Knight and DD is the HRN coordinate for c3.
Pawns
For Pawns, only enter the destination square's HRN coordinate, and any pawn that can make a legal move to that square will be played.
E.g. Typing JF plays the King's Pawn Opening (e4).
SHRN also supports pawn captures.
| Key | G | H |
| Action | Capture Up-Right | Capture Up-Left |
E.g. Pawn JF capturing on the up-right square KJ can be typed as JFG
